Stagnant Asset Growth Masks Credit Portfolio Volatility

Investment Thesis • Updated 2026Q1

VerdictNeutral
Growth:Contracting
Profitability:Strained
Financial:Healthy
Cash Flow:Mixed
Primary Risk:CRE concentration and funding

Key Thesis Takeaways

  • Stellar Bancorp faces a challenging outlook characterized by range-bound net interest income between $98 million and $106 million and persistent net interest margin compression near 1.0%.
  • While the bank maintains a robust capital buffer with an equity-to-assets ratio of 15%, its heavy reliance on a $9.4 billion investment securities portfolio limits core loan growth potential.
  • Investors should monitor the bank's reactive provisioning strategy, which saw a significant $39.2 million charge in 2026Q1, as it reflects underlying risks within the concentrated Southeast Texas commercial real estate exposure.

Verdict Logic

while the bank maintains a stable equity-to-assets ratio of 15%, the lack of revenue growth and the volatility of credit provisions, which reached a $39.2 million charge in 2026Q1, warrant a cautious approach.
