Regulated Asset Expansion Drives Long-Term Value Creation

Investment Thesis • Updated 2026Q1

VerdictNeutral
Growth:Stable
Profitability:Stable
Financial:Adequate
Cash Flow:Burning
Primary Risk:Regulatory capital recovery lag

Key Thesis Takeaways

  • Fortis Inc.
  • continues to execute a disciplined capital deployment strategy, leveraging its $52.3 billion net PPE base to drive consistent, regulated earnings growth across its North American utility footprint.
  • While the company faces inherent liquidity pressures due to a current ratio of 0.49 and significant external financing needs, its ability to maintain a 27.6% operating margin suggests effective regulatory cost recovery.
  • Investors should monitor the ongoing $25 billion capital plan, which remains the primary catalyst for future rate base expansion despite the potential for earnings volatility from seasonal demand shifts.

Verdict Logic

while the dividend remains well-supported by an OCF-to-dividend coverage ratio of 4.8x as of 2026Q1, the current valuation of 24.29x P/E TTM warrants caution regarding near-term capital appreciation potential.
