NII Growth Faces Structural Margin Headwinds

Investment Thesis • Updated 2026Q1

VerdictNeutral
Growth:Expanding
Profitability:Strong
Financial:Fortress
Cash Flow:Mixed
Primary Risk:Margin compression and fee volatility

Key Thesis Takeaways

  • First Bancorp demonstrates resilient net interest income expansion, evidenced by a 15.3% year-over-year growth rate in 2026Q1, yet the bank's profitability remains constrained by a thin 0.8% net interest margin.
  • While the fortress balance sheet with a 0.13 equity-to-assets ratio provides a significant buffer against credit volatility, the reliance on securities portfolio liquidation for liquidity suggests potential sensitivity to interest rate cycles.
  • Investors should monitor the bank's ability to stabilize non-interest income, which has historically suffered from sharp swings, including negative contributions in late 2024 and 2025.

Verdict Logic

while the bank shows consistent NII growth of 15.3% year-over-year, the current 23.71 P/E TTM and thin 0.8% NIM suggest that valuation may be stretched relative to the bank's structural profitability constraints.
